Next Generation Design and Full Product Development

Long-time client, Heath Consultants, recruited our team for their next generation product design. As an extension of their team, we provided initial concepts through production engineering for their handheld methane leak detector. Our design needed to address environmental concerns and be rugged enough to protect the optics and technology inside. After developing the appropriate family aesthetic, we mocked up the design in physical form using soft foam. This enabled us to test and tweak the design to improve ergonomics around the grip, and user interface for the buttons and display viewing angle, before getting into CAD development. Throughout our process, we prototype and test helping to minimize risk and get into production faster.

Project Objectives:

  • Need for a next generation enclosure design with intuitive user interface
  • Ergonomic and rugged design to environmentally protect internal optics and hardware components
  • Accessory development to include: dual battery charging system, battery enclosure, safety/utility vest and harness

Helix’s Approach:

  • Develop industrial design solutions to address appropriate family aesthetics, user experience, and mechanical assembly
  • Create soft models and mock-ups to test ergonomics and relative size
  • Refine design and create 3D CAD geometry
  • Utilize internal 3D printing capabilities to further test ergonomics, assembly, and component fit
  • Create multiple prototypes for field test, sales demos, and tradeshow display
  • Complete production design and document for release to tooling manufacturer
